What an honor. I was nervous. There are two spots where I hesitate and have to remember what I wanted to say. I’m a marcher when I present or lecture, and the TED guys told me for the filming, I had to stay on the little round red shag carpet circle. This was tough. It took me a minute to work that into my brain. it also took me a minute to loosen up. I take my cues from audience eye contact and body language. The stage lights prevented this, so I felt like I was flying blind. I present and speak barefoot and in beach shorts and T-shirts, but I made it work. The people and crew on this rocked! they were amazing and again, what an honor!
I heard an interview on NPR with an educator in rural Kenya, I think. It was a breakdown-freakout-deadline-due-procrastinate-anyway-and-end-up-doing-nothing day. I regret not paying closer attention, but I will never forget what she said when the NPR reporter asked her how she did all she did with what little she had to do it with. "Every action I take, every decision I make, must serve the mission." She was this bad-ass traveling educator who went from community to community, empowering voices and spreading access.
